Dress Shape Diary

We find a lot of brides come in curious about which silhouette will flatter their body best. The answer depends on your personal preference—different silhouettes do different things for your body, so it all depends on what part of your body you want to emphasize. For the bride who’s not sure where to start, we’re giving a breakdown of the most popular bridal silhouettes.

Ball Gown

The ball gown is an iconic bridal silhouette, and has been around for decades. The ball gown instantly gives you a bold, feminine look, with the full skirt creating a princess-like elegance. The skirt begins at your natural waist, and creates a full, bell-like shape, making the silhouette stand out. This shape is perfect for the woman who wants to emphasize her arms and torso while wearing a striking wedding dress.

A-line

The A-line is one of the most popular silhouettes, and it’s not hard to see why: this classic bridal silhouette is universally flattering, and makes everyone look slimmer. Like the ball gown, the skirt begins at the natural waist, but the A-line’s skirt is much less full. The gentle, slanting A-shape of the skirt emphasizes your waist, making you look both slimmer and taller.

Mermaid

Mermaid silhouettes are known for their bold, dramatic look, and are often the perfect choice for women who want something truly statement-making. The bodice is fitted through the hip, and the skirt begins flaring out from the knee. This creates an exaggerated hourglass shape, highlighting your curves and giving you a sultry look.

Fit and Flare

Much like the mermaid, the fit and flare skirt begins below the hip, but the key difference is in where the skirt starts: rather than the knee, the skirt of a fit and flare begins midway down the thigh. This gives the same curvy hourglass shape, but with a much more relaxed look. If you want the sultry, curve-loving look of a mermaid dress, but with a more laid-back, effortless look, the fit and flare silhouette is perfect for you.
